Clinical Pilates and General Pilates

What is it?

The Key Differences

Clinical Pilates is patient-specific

Clinical Pilates is used for patient-specific treatment after an injury or surgery. It differs from ‘general’ Pilates because the focus is more targeted at spinal alignment, control and strength. With us, we do a formal initial assessment, by a qualified instructor/Physiotherapist where your individual needs and capabilities are determined. Carolyn has years of experience in both physiotherapy and pilates (both matwork and reformer) and  is exceptionally well placed. Her expert knowledge allows your program to be tailored to your individual needs and take into account your goals and specific injuries. Meaning that depending on your goals, there are lots of possible benefits: Improvements in posture, flexibility, muscle strength, control, balance, and core, and pelvic floor strengthening etc.

Non-Clinical Pilates

Pilates caters to the general public focusing on general strengthening core conditioning, it isn’t individualised to you and your specific goals. The focus of Pilates is to improving overall physical health, rather than a particular muscle area, which can be a great addition to your weekly routine. Classes can be mat or reformer-based, and can involve different props such as weights, resistance bands and balls. At clinic we will be offering mat based pilates.

What’s best for me?

There is no right or wrong here, both have excellent benefits, the choice is likely dependent on your goals and specific needs. If you have a specific injury that you would like addressing then clinical pilates may be best in the first instance, you may then find this is well managed and can attend ongoing general classes.

If you are looking to add a little more control, strengthening and balance into your weekly routine then jump into our general classes – coming soon!
